VMC proposes to appoint experts to check materials

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, Sept 21: Concerned over the quality of materials used in major civic works related to water, storm water drains and sewerage and faulty implementation, the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) has proposed to appoint experts to monitor the quality.

The proposal is likely to be taken up for discussion in the Standing Committee meeting on Thursday.

In his proposal, Municipal Commissioner G R Aloria has stated that often doubts are raised over the quality of materials used and the type of work carried out. He has stated that not only was the quality of materials purchased questionable, even the work carried out left much to be desired.

Besides supervision, experts -- from various fields, including civil, mechanical and electrical -- will check whether the materials used are as per specifications. Major works related to storm water, drainage, water works and solid waste will come under their purview.

If passed, the experts will supervise civil and mechanical works costing more than Rs 10 lakh. Projects, which cost up to Rs 20 lakhs and where materials are provided by the corporation, will also be monitored. Aloria has expressed hope that the move would increase credibility of the civic works.

The Committee will also consider the administration's move to give Akota Stadium to ``Ma Trust'' at the rate of Rs 5,000 per day for holding garbas. A civic official said as the Stadium was not given at a token rate, it did not violate any rules.

Suspended: The VMC has suspended as many as 113 employees in 1997 and up to August end this year, according to an official spokesman. This is besides departmental inquiries initiated against 44 officers and employees in 1997 and up to August this year. Show-cause notices have been issued to 46 employees. Stating that the move was to improve the administration, the spokesman added that in some cases fines were collected and increments stopped. The action have been taken under the direct instructions of Municipal Commissioner G R Aloria and Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Administration) H S Patel.
