Fergusson College eves bag U-19 title

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, Sept 21: Fergusson College won the under-19 girls title defeating Ness Wadia 29-22 in the Pune District Multi Games Sports Council (PDMGSC) basketball tournament at the Don Bosco School courts today.

Both teams deservedly reached the final after convincing performances in the preliminary and semi-final stages.

The final showdown in the evening session saw both teams excel. Rapid moves were the order of the day with equal attempts made on either side. Identical colours sported by both teams at times proved a drawback leading to slow passing reflexes.

Fergusson, at the end of the first-half, were marginally ahead 12-10, which meant no team could be judged superior than the other.

Coming back rejuvenated after lemon time the score board pattern remained the same as in the first-half with Ness Wadia closely trailing Fergusson most of the time.

Eventually better conversion by the Fergie girls saw them win by a sly seven-point margin at the final whistle.

Tanya Vaidya ended up top-scorer with 10 points for the winners, with Khushboo Sancheti who played a supportive role dunked in eight points. For the losers, Sureerat Sachnakul spearheaded the attack, despite an illness, to notch-up nine points and was assisted by Poonam Gugle who contributed six points.

Earlier during the day Fergusson trounced St. Patrick's with a whopping 36-2 scoreline and later put aside BMCC's challenge in the semi-final winning 28-15.

Ness Wadia too breezed through to the final humbling S.P College by a distant score of 17-5.

The tournament was inaugurated by Fr.Crispino D'souza, principal of Don Bosco School.
