CALCUTTA: India's juniors boxers won four bronze medals in the recently held Brandenburg Cup in Frankfurt, Germany. India finished sixth as a team in the nine-team event.

The boxers had won laurels in the Asian Youth Boxing championships in Taiwan (two bronze), the Timur Cup in Uzbekistan (two silver, four bronze).

A selected group of young boxers will now proceed for a month-long training camp in Delhi. The team for the World Under-19 Boxing Championships to be held in Argentina from November 5, will be selected during the course of this camp.

Indian boys finish ninth

NEW DELHI: Indian boys defeated Brazil, China and Mexico in play-off ties to finish ninth in a field of 16 in the just-concluded NEC World Youth Cup (under-16) held at Cuneo, Italy. Given a tough draw India went down 0-3 to Croatia, who finished second behind champions Spain, but then beat Brazil 2-1, China 3-0 and Mexico 2-1 to top the standings for the 9-16 places.

Akshay Vishal Rao lostto Roko Karanusic 2-6, 3-6 and Kamala Kannan went down 0-6, 1-6 to Mario Radic before Rao and Kannan went down fighting to Karanusic and Radic 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 4-6 in the doubles. But the indian lads did well then on winning the next three ties to finish ninth.

Two-day BCCI AGM from today

CALCUTTA: The Board of Control for Cricket in India will hold their two-day Annual General meeting here from Wednesday. This AGM assumes significance as the new selection committee will be formed. Although, the idea of a three-man selection committee is being talked about, the BCCI is likely to continue with the five-man system. At least, the new selection committee is expected to be a five-man one. Other routine matters will also be discussed and a vice-president stands to be changed.

India's performance in the Sahara Cup as well as the Commonwealth Games will also come up. Financial aspects will be discussed along with other topics.

Mohanty stranded due to bandh

BALASORE: Debasish Mohanty, who isbound for Zimbabwe, was stranded at the Basta railway station in Balasore district due to the BJP-sponsored Orissa bandh. Mohanty, was travelling to Calcutta by the Puri-Howrah Sri Jagannath Express to catch a flight to Delhi from there in the afternoon on his way to join other teammates in Zimbabwe for the short tour.

Supporters of the bandh detained the train for five hours before police removed obstructions to enable it to proceed.

Junior spikers for Teheran

CHENNAI:Harun Kan of Tamil Nadu will be the captain of the 16-member Indian team which will take part in the Asian Junior men volleyball championship to be held at Tehran from October 8 to Oct 15.

BAI revise tournament schedule

VIJAYAWADA: The Badminton Association of India (BAI),in its tournament committee meeting, held at Chennai recently, has revised the dates of the following tournaments. The North Zone leg will be held at Jaipur (Rajasthan) from Oct 3 to 5, while the North-East segment is scheduled for Oct 3 to 7 at Itanagar. Bareily (Uttar Pradesh) will host an All-India Open tournament from Dec 21 to 23.

Chennai will stage the junior Nationals from Nov 19 to 23, for which Gurucharan Singh of Punjab will officiate as Chief Referee. Qualifying matches will be held on Nov 17.
