Valiant knock by Ajay Mehra

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE

S A S NAGAR, Sept 22: Despite Mohali skipper Ajay Mehra's brave effort, under difficult playing conditions, the newly formed Mohali District team went down to Ropar on run rate in the rain curtailed two day Punjab Inter-District Katoch Shield cricket match at the PCA Stadium today.

With the consistent threat of rain, Mohali batsmen, chasing Ropar's first innings total of 240, had to at least maintain a better run rate than their opponents. However, none of the Mohali batsmen, save for Ajay Mehra who scored 77 runs off 134 balls, could come out of their shells and finally the team was pipped by a difference of a mere .6 per cent. They were 153 for 6 in 59 overs when heavy rain brought curtains to the match as well as their fortunes.

Ajay Mehra's contribution could be gauged from the fact that the next highest scorer for Mohali was Aman Kumar who was out at his overnight score of 15. Mehra hit six fours in his innings.

Scores
Ropar (Ist innings): 240 all out.
Mohali: 153 for 6 (Ajay Mehra 77, Shyam Sunder 3-39, Surinder Kumar 3-58).
