Clinton keeps date with Sharif; Vajpayee gives him a miss
Conflicting strategic interests and domestic snafus have once again muddied the waters of Indo-US relations amid high expectations arising from Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee first visit to American shores as India's premier. The lack of any decisive wrap-up in the Jaswant Singh-Strobe Talbott talks and President Clinton's domestic hassles has put a hold on the grand deal that was expected to have been worked out by now.

Malaysia bears down on Anwar's crusade
The Malaysian authorities on Tuesday stepped up a clampdown on the reform movement launched by detained former deputy premier Anwar Ibrahim after two days of street clashes. Police surrounded Anwar's home where his wife, Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, has taken over leadership of the reform campaign.

Sharif faces rising revolt over Shariah Bill
Dissent within the ruling Pakistan Muslim League (PML) against the Shariah bill seems to be increasing although rebel PML lawmakers are staying away from a debate in parliament to avoid any further controversy. Only one ruling party member spoke on the bill during the national assembly session on Monday evening.
