Private tutorials plan to take double shift during Diwali vacation

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SEPTEMBER 23: "We have information that many private tutorials have decided to take double shifts during Diwali vacation to finish the portion. Which means that the classes will be on right from 7 am to 10 pm without ever bothering how the students will endure such long hours in the cramped rooms,'' said the Forum President Bhagvanji Raiyani.

Adding that the Forum will be submitting an affidavit in this regard in the Bombay High Court during the next hearing of their writ petition (number 1035 of 1998), Raiyani explained that `operation speed-up' was mainly happening in those coaching classes which had employed working college teachers. ``The lecturers and professors know that government will take action against them if they are caught teaching in the private classes, hence they want to finish the portion quickly, so that later they could stay away from classes for a few months,'' he said.

Despite the resignations of ten professors, the forum is still not impressed with the state government's attempts to curb the nexus between college professors and coaching classes. In a letter recently written to the joint director of higher education, R R Pardeshi, Raiyani has stated: ``It appears that you are investigating only the names in the Forum's writ. The committee will not be able to justify its work unless it cracks down on coaching classes. The task force should be strengthened so that the directions of the court could be complied with at the earliest.''

The Forum has also submitted over 100 more names to the court. ``Even the teachers who have resigned from colleges must be punished. They have made a lot of money and their assets should be thoroughly checked,'' Raiyani wrote in his letter to the state. He also urged for the formation of a separate intelligence network in all the districts to curb tuitions and coaching classes.

However, the minister of state for education, Anil Deshmukh, stated that government was doing its best to curb the menace. ``We have decided to have more district level committees and open a complaint cell to tackle the problem,'' he said.
