Wadekar new chairman of selectors

Saibal Bose
CALCUTTA, SEPT 23: Former Indian cricket captain and West Zone selector Ajit Wadekar will be the new chairman of the Selection Committee. This was decided on the first day of Board of Control for Cricket in India's Annual General Meeting here today.

Wadekar takes over from Kishen Rungta, the Central Zone representative, whose tenure ended recently. Former Ranji Trophy player Anil Deshpande will replace Rungta from Central Zone. Ashok Malhotra, another established first class player and former Bengal Ranji captain, will replace Sambaran Banerjee as the selector from East Zone. Banerjee's term also ended, selecting the team for Zimbabwe tour being his last assignment.

Former Test player and Indian team's coach Madan Lal will replace MP Pandove as the selector from North Zone. Shivlal Yadav retains his place as the selector from South.

While announcing the new Selection Committee, the BCCI secretary Jaywant Lele said that all the decisions were unanimous. ``We had very little trouble in selecting the new committee.'' Anshuman Gaekwad will remain the coach of the senior cricket team till next September. Krishnamachari Srikkanth will also hold his place as the junior team's coach for the same duration. Dr. Chaddha and Andrew Kokinos have been retained as the team doctor and the physical trainer of the senior team. Bobby Simpson will continue as the advisor till the World Cup.

Among other changes in the Board's office-bearers, three new vice-presidents and treasurer were elected. While Kishore Rungta replaces SK Nair as the treasurer, AN Singh, CK Khanna and AC Muthaiah will take over as the vice-presidents in places of Samiran Chakraborty, SDA Drabu and N Venkata Rao.

The AGM, which was a relatively timid affair when compared to the Chennai one, still had its moments of pandemonium when the BCCI officials refused to allow representatives of Jammu and Kashmir to attend the meeting. It recalls that both Jammu and Kashmir and Karnataka boards have been restrained from attending the meeting by court's stay orders. Nagaland and Manipur were affiliated as associate members of the BCCI today.
