Bennett & Coleman seeks damages from The Statesman
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
MUMBAI, SEPT 23: The Mumbai High Court today declined to grant any interim relief in a suit filed by Bennett Coleman and Co Ltd, owners of the Times of India|>, against The Statesman, claiming Rs 100 crores as damages for allegedly carrying out a campaign against its chairman Ashok Kumar Jain. The plaintiff prayed for an interim injunction to restrain The Statesman from repeating any of the 85 articles published by it between January 1997 and September 1998, alleging Jain's involvement in FERA violation. It also pleaded for restricting the newspaper from selling or distributing their book titled Hounding Bezboruah. Hearing arguments at length, Justice K K Baam ordered The Statesman to file their affidavit by September 30 and postponed the case to October 7. The Statesman was represented by senior advocate Goolam Vahanvati. Copyright © 1998 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
