Resolution on Kosovo: The UN Security Council was set to adopt a resolution on Wednesday demanding a cease-fire in Kosovo and threatening further action if the violence continues. A draft of the resolution doesn't authorise NATO forces to stop the fighting, but says ``the Council would consider further action and additional measures to maintain or restore peace and stability in the region,'' if both sides in the conflict don't cease hostilities. Russia said it would go along with the resolution, whose primary goal was to demand a ceasefire to stop what has become a humanitarian disaster. China traditionally objects to intervention in what it considers internal matters.

Call for a nuke-free world: Eight nations pressing for a nuclear weapon-free world aren't giving up because of recent nuclear tests by India and Pakistan. They're taking their campaign to the UN General Assembly. The eight non-nuclear countries Ireland, Sweden, New Zealand, South Africa, Brazil, Egypt, Mexico and Slovenia saidon Tuesday that they want eight nations with nuclear weapons to follow South Africa's example and dispose of their nuclear arsenals. The five nuclear powers -- the US, Russia, Britain, France and China -- are permanent members of the UN Security Council.

Intruders charged: Two women have been charged with lying to federal agents about a scheme by a reputed member of an Iranian opposition group and another man to sneak into the United Nations General Assembly. Investigators suspect the men may have wanted to stage ``some sort of demonstration'' during Monday's opening session, said Denise Gibson, spokeswoman for the secret service in New York city. The men recruited two women, Elham Kiamanesh and Elham Zanjani, last week to help them get press passes to the General Assembly, according to a criminal complaint filed in a US district court.
