MUMBAI, Sept 23: Bengal Mumbai Football Club (BMFC) threw cellar side Income-Tax's attempted `Ripley's Believe or Not' script into the dustbin with a second-half blitz today at the Cooperage. The current favourites for the title overturned a 2-5 half-time deficit to a 7-5 victory in the Gulf Oil WIFA Super Division football league on a day when rain stayed away but goals came in a windfall.
That, however, did not persist in the following match which ended barren despite the efforts of Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilisers (RCF) and Bank of India (BoI).
Both sides erred frequently on a quagmire of a pitch that aggravated some the effects of some perplexing refereeing by referee James Jones.
Today's results consolidates BMFC's claim to the title on their debut. The newly formed professional side now tally 26 points from 12 games.
BMFC coach Jamshed Nassiri flayed his side's casual defence for their first half predicament but onlookers had little doubt that BMFC, their vaunted strike force to the fore, had every chance of coming back.
Nassiri, though, felt the need to tongue-lash his team at half-time and reshuffle his players to bring about mid-field cohesion.
The taxmen, heading for relegation, drew first blood in the 5th minute through Gokul Chandran who punished Gumpe Rime, bewildered and bemused by his lowly opponents early surge. It was 2-0 within the 22nd minute when Neil D'Costa put away Baptist Lobo's pass. Then came three goals in successive minutes. Abhay Kumar scored a goal of class, using sudden turn and deception to leave goalkeeper Santosh Shinde transfixed in the 28th minute following a flag-kick. The scores were level within 60 seconds when Nigerean forward Emeka struck.
Crazy going when Lobo regained the lead for Income-Tax the very next minute, the striker scoring from an acute angle from a lob by substitute Rajesh Pendurkar and the duo reversed roles to make it 4-2 in the 39th minute.
The crowd, BMFC and probably Income-Tax themselves rubbed their eyes in disbelief when Loboslotted home a penalty on the dot of half-time to bring up an incredulous 5-2 scoreline.
Abdul Khalique, began to enjoy the support of his colleagues. His cross in the 54th minute found Abhay Kumar who put away his second goal at the outset of a fine second half display. Abhay struck again, scoring his third with a shot to the top right corner of the goal Khalique once again being the provider. Kasif Jamal rewarded Khalique who crossed yet again, guiding into goal after Herbert Philip glanced the ball in the 66th minute. Income-Tax goalkeeper Shinde's misery compounded with a horrific collision. Substitute `keeper Rajendra Sawant whose butter fingers gave BMFC the lead for the first time in the match.
It came in the 75th minute and for the fourth time in succession stemmed from Khalique's cross that Sawant let slip into his net.
Hardly threatened in the second session, BMFC sealed victory with an injury-time goal -- substitute Aftab Ashraf toeing in Herbert Philip's corner past a demoralisedIncome-Tax defence.
Mahindras reprieved
The WIFA Super Division committee, admitting to an administrative lapse on their part, have decided not to take action on Mahindras or their goalkeeper Salim Ansari. Ansari was alleged to have played five matches for Mahindras before being granted a transfer from Dempo (Goa).
This was informed by Super Division committee chairman Shahzad Shah after today's meeting. Shah said the committee admitted to WIFA's administrative lapse in the matter. Mahindras will not forfeit any points nor pay a fine.
The committee also acted on the abandoned Union Bank of India (UBI)-BMFC match on September 19. Based on the referee's report, the match has been awarded to BMFC who led 2-1 with just a minute to go before UBI protested against fading light and refused to play on. The referee deemed the light good enough.
In another issue, BMFC's apology for today's untoward incident in the match against Income-Tax, involving player Kasif Jamal, manager Shabbir Ahmed andreserve referee JP Singh, prevented action against BMFC.
A fourth issue will see WIFA referring another case of player eligibility -- that of Central Bank of India's (CBI) Valky D'Silva -- to the AIFF on the insistence of Air-India. Air-India have taken objection to SS Shetty -- an ex-employee of CBI -- chairing the disciplinary committee meeting that barred D'Silva and fined CBI Rs 5,000 .
