BJP bows to President's wishes
Stung by Friday's snub from President K R Narayanan and bowing to relentless pressure from its allies, the BJP-led Government decided yesterday not to press for the dismissal of the Bihar state government. At an hour-long formal meeting chaired by Home Minister L K Advani, the Union Cabinet decided against sending back the recommendation which Narayanan had returned for reconsideration.

Four states go to polls on Nov 25
Political parties face a test of strength with assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi and Mizoram scheduled to be held on November 25. The Election Commission announced yesterday that notification for the one-day polls will be issued on October 30, with November 6 being the last date for filing nominations. Counting of votes will take place on November 28.

Victory of secular forces, says Laloo
RJD President Laloo Prasad Yadav yesterday said that the decision of the Union Cabinet not to re-recommend imposition of President's rule in Bihar was a victory for secular forces. Yadav said that he, alongwith the Chief Minister Rabri Devi, would meet the President today to thank him for upholding democracy and constitution.
