Schroeder is new German Chancellor
Social Democrat Gerhard Schroeder swept to a stunning victory over Chancellor Helmut Kohl in the German federal elections on Sunday with a majority for a leftist coalition with the Greens. "The Kohl era is over after 16 years,'' Schroeder declared before cheering supporters at the Bonn headquarters of his Social Democratic Party (SPD). The SPD won 41.2% of the votes, according to projections based on partially counted ballots by the ZDF public TV network.

Laloo's day-and-a-half visit after scoring a political victory over the Bihar events was ostensibly meant to bolster unity moves among the leading anti-BJP groups like the Rashtriya Loktantrik Morcha, the Left and the Congress.
