Last of flying Finns dead Helsinki: Viljo Akseli Heino, the last of the track stars called the Flying Finns, died at 84, the International Amateur Atheltic Federation said on Monday. Heino died September 15 in Tampere. Although Heino was not as well known as others known by the nickname, such as Paavo Nurmi and Viljam Ritola, he set world records even after suffering a leg injury in Finland's 1939 war against the Soviet Union. In 1944, Heino set the world record for 10,000 metres of 28:38.6 at a race in Helsinki.

Cup boycott

BRUSSELS: Europe's leading professional soccer leagues have said they would boycott January's controversial Confederations Cup in Mexico. ``The professional leagues have decided that they will not take part and will not make players available for the Confederations Cup,'' said Jean-Marie Philips, director of the Belgian Professional Soccer League.

Female official

London: The British Boxing board of control today appointed its first female official in theorganisation's 69-year history. Judith Rollestone, a commercial attorney from London, joined the Board's panel of administrative stewards, the decision-making body of domestic boxing.

Award for Italians

ROME: Italy's Davis Cup players will split $ 700,000 as a reward for advancing to the final by defeating the United States, Italian Tennis Federation President Francesco Ricci Bitti said on Monday.

Italy, who last won the Davis Cup in 1976, routed the United States 4-1 this weekend, with Andrea Gaudenzi, Davide Sanguinetti and Gianluca Pozzi registering singles victories and Gaudenzi teaming with Diego Nargiso to take the doubles match.
