Zagade slams century, Jadhav misses

MUMBAI, Sept 30: Vijay Manjrekar XI and Dattu Phadkar XI gained five points each from their first-round league matches against Khandu Rangnekar XI and Vijay Merchant XI, respectively, in the 12th Sportstar Trophy Mumbai Cricket Association under-19 selection trial tournament.

At the Elf-Vengsarkar Cricket Academy ground, Oval, Manjrekar XI bowled out Rangnekar XI for 187 after declaring their first innings at the overnight total of 323 for 3 wickets.

At the Brabourne Stadium, Phadkar XI overhauled Merchant XI's total of 276 with ease.

For Phadkar, who started the day at 36 for 2 wickets, the initial thrust was given by captain Phushkaraj Jadhav and Viraj Zagade. Left-hander Jadhav struck 10 fours in a typically aggressive innings of 82. Jadhav and Zagade raised 149 runs for the fourth wicket. Jadhav, who looked good to get a century, was dismissed soon after lunch.

But Zagade made an exact hundred with 14 fours. He batted for 167 minutes. Zagade became the second batsman to score a century in thetournament. The first ton being scored for Manjrekar XI by captain Sushant Manjrekar at the Elf ground on yesterday.

Zagade and Yogesh Kaudhare were dismissed when the Phadkar XI score was 227, still 50 runs adrift from taking the lead. Phadkar XI had only four wickets in hand.

But the seventh-wicket stand between the Gavas cousins -- Sameer and Nilesh -- changed the complexion of the game in minutes. They slammed the ball all over the park and added 96 runs in quick time. Sameer went on to make a century (122, 163 mins, 149 balls, 21x4s). Nilesh made 46 with three fours. Then the ninth-wicket pair of Sameer Gavas and Uday Karkera rattled 85 runs in just 16 overs.

At the Elf ground, off-spinner Darshan Panchal became the first bowler to capture five wickets in the 12th edition of the tournament. Rangnekar XI lost three wickets for 51 runs after which Dushyant Kadam and Samrat Chitre added 61 runs in 18.4 overs. Kadam made 55 in a little over one hour's time with half a dozen fours. In the end, Khotethrew his bat around to make a quick 39 with one six and three fours.

The third-round league match between Vijay Manjrekar XI and Dattu Phadkar XI has been advanced by 13 days. The two meet at the Elf ground from October 1 to 3.

Vijay Merchant XI 276 drew with Dattu Phadkar XI 409 (V Mane 30, P Jadhav 72, V Zagade 100, N Gavas 46, S Gavas 122; Pawar 3-72, S Jadhav 4-57). Phadkar XI 5 points; Merchant XI 3 points.

Vijay Manjrekar XI 323 for 3 decl drew with Khandu Rangnekar XI 187 (S Chitre 38, D Kadam 55, M Khote 39; D Panchal 5-43). Manjrekar XI 5 points; Rangnekar XI 3 points.
