Gaiety, fervour mark Dussera

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
AHMEDABAD, Oct 1: Dussera, symbolising the victory of good over evil, was celebrated with the burning of the effigies of demon-king Ravana, his brother Kumbhkarna and son Meghnada, all over the State on Thursday. Thousands, who had gathered at Ramlila Ground and Kankaria Football Ground to watch the victory, cheered in ecstasy as the effigies went up in flames one after another, commemorating Lord Rama's victory over Ravana.

People also made a beeline at outlets selling mouth-watering Fafda-chatni and jalebi and sizzling fafda-chatni, without caring a penny about dropsy.

Says Ashwinbhai Mehta, owner of Mehta Sweets: Amdavadis consumed about 2,500 kgs of fafda and jalebi which is far less than the sale of about 4,000 kgs last year. The price of fafda shot up to Rs 70 to 90 a kg this year as against Rs 60 last year. as edible oil and besan became costlier.
