Anwar, Mushtaq stand tall among ruins
An unbeaten 132 (180b, 265m, 10x4) by Saeed Anwar lifted Pakistan from a disastrous start to a respectable 253 for eight against Australia on the first day of the first Test yesterday. It was a Test record for the ninth wicket for Pakistan against Australia.

Baboor in second round
Chetan Baboor led a group of four Indians into the second round of the men's singles in the Asian table tennis championships at Osaka. Baboor won easily beating Wong Kai Siong of Brunei 21-8, 21-8, 21-9. In the women's singles, of the four Indians in action, only NR Indu crashed out losing to Son Mi-Suk of North Korea 12-21, 15-21, 8-21.

Bangladesh stun Netherlands
Bangladesh continued their good work in the first round by upsetting eighth seed The Netherlands 2.5-1.5 in the second round of the 33rd Chess Olympiad on Wednesday. Earlier, Indian men had held Russia-II to a 2-2 draw while the women went down 1-2 to fifth seed Poland in the second round.
