Baboor leads men's third-round march

Osaka, Oct 2: National champion Chetan Baboor and former national champions S Raman and Arup Basak reached the men's singles third round but all Indian women save Poulami Ghatak were eliminated in the Asian table tennis championships at Osaka today.

In the men's singles, Baboor beat Bibish Bayarmagnai of Mongolia 21-14, 21-14, 21-10, southpaw Raman downed Foad Kaseb of Israel 21-17, 21-8, 23-21 and Basak won 21-13, 21-12, 21-16 over Thai Sanan Ariyachotima, as per results from AFP.

But Soumyadeep Roy lost 14-21, 12-21, 19-21 to 14th-seed Lee Chul-Seung of South Korea and Deepak Thukral lost 9-21, 20-22, 12-21 to Shinnosuke Kiho of Japan in the second round.

In the women's section, Poulami Ghatak moved into the third round with a walkover from Miao Miao (Australia) but Kasturi Chakravarthy fell 6-21, 12-21, 9-21 to 15th seed Keiko Okazaki of Japan and National champion MS Mythili went down fighting 21-16, 18-21, 10-21, 21-13, 10-21 to Rossy Pratiwi Dipoyanti of Indonesia.

Ninth seeds Baboor and Ramandowned Majid Ehteshamzadeh and Shahram Sarbakhsian of Israel 21-12, 21-11 after beating Low Dai Yei and Wong Kai Siong (Brunei) 21-10, 21-9 in the men's doubles.

CHINA DOMINATE: Meanwhile China continued to dominate by winning the mixed doubles title through Wang Liqin and Wang Nan for their third gold medal at the championships.

The second-seeded couple put down a third Korean challenge of the day beating Lee Chul-Seung and Ryu Ji-Hye 21-7, 21-15 in the final.
