Indian expats top suicide rates in UAE

DUBAI, Oct 4: Indians had the highest suicide rates in the United Arab Emirates among expatriates, according to a Dubai police study. Ninety-two per cent of all suicide attempts and suicides were by the expatriates in Dubai and Abu Dhabi and Indians accounted for three-fourths of these, the Gulf Today daily reported quoting a study. About 80 per cent of those who committed suicide were male while 67 per cent were non-Muslims, it said.Fifty per cent of people who commit suicide in Abu Dhabi fall between the age group of 20 to 30 years.Copyright © 1998 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
