VADODARA, Oct 4: After naming its cows and bulls after religious and social personalities of the land, authorities of the Baroda Central Jail have named the one dozen barracks of prisoners after the names of freedom fighters and eminent historical figures of the nation on Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary on Friday. While the 12 halls housing male prisoners have been serially named as Gandhi, Nehru, Subhash, Ambedkar, Sardar, Shastri, Tilak, Lohia, Morarji, Azad, Shivaji and Vivekanand barracks, the women's barrack is yet to be given a name. Barrack names written properly on wooden plates were displayed prominently at the entrance of each barrack on Friday morning.
Talking to The Indian Express, Jail Superintendent Ramnivas Meena said the purpose behind naming the barracks after prominent personalities was to remind the convicts and undertrials of the invaluable contribution they made for the country's freedom. Meena said the step would go a long way in helping reform inmates.
He said inmates with religious bent of mind would be accommodated in the Vivekanand barrack.
