CALCUTTA: East Bengal registered one of their biggest wins at the Salt Lake Stadium here today, defeating Mohameddan Sporting 7-1 in a Calcutta Super Division Football League second phase match. Four goals were scored in each half with Sporting contributing only the equaliser after Ghanian Suley Musah had put East Bengal ahead.
East Bengal midfielder Basudeb Mondal added two for his team in the first half. The fourth goal for East Bengal found Bhaichung Bhutia setting up an unmarked Renedy Singh with a measured pass. Renedyhad little difficulty in placing past Sporting goalkeeper Debasis Kundu, doing services in place of an indisposed Shanti Majumdar.
Bhutia once again played a crucial role a few minutes later, grabbing a pass from Jackson Egyogopang and putting Emmanuel Opoku in the clear who scored with a calm head.
Bhutia himself got the sixth goal for his team and substitute Bijen Singh struck the last off a melee, to add the final salt on Sporting's wounds.
