Ward officer suspended, probe against fire chief

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, October 6: The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has suspended ward officer R V Patil who was responsible for giving sanction to the Lake View restaurant, where 11 people died in a blast on Sunday. An enquiry has also been ordered against outgoing Chief Fire Officer Vaman Gangurde, during whose tenure the fire department had granted the restaurant approval.

The corporation has also decided to survey the 1,500-odd food vending establishments in the area to detect if they have violated FSI or made any unauthorised constructions. The concerned deputy municipal commissioners of the areas will head a team comprising officials from the town planning and fire departments to conduct the survey. Notices will be issued to defaulting owners.

TMC commissioner T S Chandrashekhar also declared that it would be mandatory for all new hotels to get a no objection certificate from the fire brigade. ``I have also spoken to Thane Commissioner of Police Bhujangrao Mohite, who has agreed that the police will insist onan NOC from the fire brigade before granting their sanction.''

A TMC team demolished illegal portions of the premises of Lake View as well other establishments like Saikripa Hotel, Chinese hotel, Sizz n' Pizz fast food centre and Pooja Chinese hotel. Criminal offences have been registered against owners of these establishments under the Maharashtra Regional Town Planning Act and a show-cause notice issued to them asking why their food licenses should not be revoked. They have been given 48 hours to provide an explanation.
