Free hand for Kalyan
Buoyed by the Supreme Court's decision in the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLAs disqualification case, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalyan Singh dropped three ministers, all from the BJP, from his government and reshuffled portfolios of seven others. The dropped ministers are Sunder Singh Baghel, Gorakh Nath Nishad and Shiv Ganesh, all Ministers of State.

Pak House passes Shariat Bill
Pakistan's National Assembly, which is dominated by the ruling PML-N party, overwhelmingly voted yesterday morning to pass the Shariat Bill, which will pave the way for the Nawaz Sharif government acquiring sweeping powers to interpret and impose laws based on interpretations of the Holy Quran, the Muslim holy book.

MSEB workers unions oppose Thackeray's free-power plan
Cutting across party affiliations, all the nine recognised unions in the Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB), representing more than a lakh employees, asked the alliance government to reject Sena supremo Bal Thackeray's proposal to give free power to farmers. Thackeray had earlier asked Chief Minister Manohar Joshi to provide free electricity to about 24 lakh farmers in his Dassera rally at Shivaji Park on October 1.

BSP split case for Constitution Bench
The Kalyan Singh Government in Uttar Pradesh got a fresh lease of life with the Supreme Court (SC) referring the issue of disqualification of 12 Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLAs supporting the BJP-led Government to a Constitution Bench following split verdict by a three-judge Bench. Chief Justice M M Punchhi, heading the three-judge Bench of Justice K T Thomas and Justice Srinivasan, took this decision saying that the matter involved judicial review of the Speaker's decision.
