MUMBAI, October 10: Following the daring getaway of dreaded sharpshooter, Firoz Konkani, from the J J Hospital, another accused managed to escape in the early hours of Saturday but was re-arrested within hours by the police.Auto-thief, Mohammed Nanhe Yaqub Bangali alias Fawda, escaped from ward no 9 of the J J Hospital at 6 am, when the police watchman escorting him had gone to answer a call of nature. When efforts to trace him within the ward and hospital premises failed, a police complaint was lodged.A police team comprising officers from the Deonar and JJ Marg police stations raided his Wadala residence. They learnt that Bengali had been to his house and gone out after a shave and change of dress. He was looking for his wife who works as a domestic servant. The police party waited for him and re-arrested him when he returned at 3 pm.
Following a tip-off in a auto-thefts case, Bangali was arrested by the Deonar police on August 8. During the course of investigation, the police managed to recover threeauto-rickshaws from him. On September 21, Bangali was remanded to police custody.
Earlier this week, Bangali showed signs of illness. Following a diagnosis of jaundice, he was admitted to ward no 9 of the hospital on Thursday at 12.30 pm. ``Normally accused and undertrials are kept in ward no 46 which facilitates vigilance on the accused. However, Bangali was kept in ward no 9 and our guard had to sit outside,'' explained the assistant police inspector, P G Mandre, of the J J Marg police station.
