Gowda for campaign to revive party

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, October 10: Former prime minister and senior Janata Dal leader H D Dewe Gowda has expressed disappointment over the performance of his party after the Lok Sabha elections and announced that he would launch a countrywide movement to strengthen the party at the grass roots level.

Gowda, who was in Mumbai on Saturday to attend a friend's marriage, addressed a hurriedly convened press conference at the JD office near Mantralaya. Gowda was visibly upset with the state of JD and said, ``After the 12th Lok Sabha elections, the party's performance is not up to expectations. It is badly in need of a revival''.

He said various political developments at the national level had drastically weakened the party. ``Formation of the National Front and the United Front and senior leaders quitting the party to join others, has had an adverse effect on the party. Though JD is the only national party after Congress and the BJP, lakhs of its committed workers are disappointed over its non performance. Instead of joininghands with others, the leaders should concentrate on rebuilding the party,'' Gowda said.

He added he would not blame any leader in particular for the poor state of the party and advised the leaders to take out time for introspection. ``I would not portray a rosy picture of the party as there are serious internal problems in all state units also. There is no coordination among national leaders who are sitting in New Delhi. But they should not sit and watch the party sink,'' he said.

Gowda announced that he had plans of an ``intensive'' tour of the nation, to meet JD activists and unite them. ``I will promote the political philosophy of the party and ask the workers to focus on issues related to the common man and those concerning Dalits, minorities and farmers,'' he added.

When asked about the claim made by the Congress to form a government at the Centre, Gowda said any party having the capacity and will to form the government should do it. ``But why is the Congress beating the drums everyday without anyreason? They are not ready to form the government,'' he said.

Commenting on the Vajpayee Government, Gowda said it was surviving on a day-to-day basis. ``The government is there today but no one is sure about tomorrow. The BJP had promised a stable government with an able prime minister. Where is the stable government? So far as the question of Vajpayee's ability is concerned, I leave it to the citizens of India,'' Gowda added.

Commenting on his own government at the Centre, Gowda said, ``So many people approached me a day before my government was pulled down. I refused their proposals of supporting my government duirng the vote of confidence motion. One day, I will reveal everything with their names,'' Gowda remarked.
