Pallavi Shah becomes IWM

Elista (Russia), OCT 11: India tasted success in both the men's and women's sections in the 12th round of the 33rd Chess Olympiad in the Chess Palace here today. Indian men defeated Iceland 2.5-1.5 while 25th seeded Indian women scored an exciting 2-1 win over 23rd seed Kazakhastan.

Pallavi Shah of Kolhapur became India's tenth International Woman Master today when she completed her third and final IWM norm here with a win. She scored 6.5 points from nine games and added the third norm to the ones she had won in Calcutta and Mumbai. Vijayalakshmi also scored a point but encountered many hurdles on the way.

Pallavi needed only a draw today for her final norm but she did it in style completing her hat-trick of wins in the last three games. Pallavi won a rook for minor piece against M Sergeeva in Sicilian defence for two pawns and later won a pawn. She won the point after 36 moves.

Vijayalakshmi had a lot of problems in the Evans Gambit against T Klink who got a mating attack. But Vijayalakshmi escaped theattack and won her game. Swati Ghate gave material for an attack against T Sergeeva in the English opening and lost in the end.

K Sasikiran was the main scorer for Indian men. He beat J Gunnarsson on the fourth board in the Evans Gambit. The Indian kept the pair of bishops and won two pieces for rook. He kept extra pawns to get the point after 56 moves. D Barua held H Stefansson on the top board in the Italian opening in 18 moves after sacrificing a piece early in the game. The game was drawn in perpetual checks. Pravin Thipsay and T Thorhallsson played out a draw in Sicilian Defence after 27 moves. Abhijit Kunte and h gretarsson were locked in an equal battle in French defence.
