OCTOBER 11: Cricket Club of India and P J Hindu Gymkhana registered first-innings victories over Catholic Gymkhana and defending champions Victory in the rain-marred first round of the Police Shield Invitational Cricket Tournament, today. If overnight rain delayed the start at all four venues, a downpour later in the day added to the frustration. Hindu Gymkhana, who did well to restrict Victory to 82, inclusive of 22 penalty runs, reached 74 for 6 when the match was abandoned. But they were awarded 10 runs when Victory was penalised for bowling one over short.
India discard Abey Kuruvilla (5 for 19) and Vishal Tawde (5 for 42) were instrumental in dismissing Victory for a paltry total.
CCI, who were chasing a moderate total of 128, were struggling at 92 for 7 when the skies opened up and play had to be stopped. This helped CCI to score a victory on a better run quotient.
At Islam Gymkhana, the tie between National and Islam Gymkhana started at 3.00 p.m. National, after being put in to bat, did well toscore 178 for two when a heavy downpour forced the match to be abandoned.
