Probe ordered into stars safari `shoot'

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
JAIPUR, October 11: Taking a serious view of the incident of hunting of wild animals by film stars in Jodhpur, the State Government after a high level meeting today ordered an inquiry into the whole affair.

A team of officials consisting of IG Police (Crime) Namonarayan Meena, Chief Wild Life Warden R.G. Soni, DIG Police Sudhir Pratap Singh, a ballistic expert and a forensic expert rushed to Jodhpur on Sunday afternoon to conduct the inquiry.

The government also ordered another post mortem of the animals said to have been killed by the film stars. The first postmortem report said that one of the animals had died of overeating and the second of a collision while taking a leap, according to the Minister for Environment & Forests Jaswant Singh Vishnoi. The veterinary doctor who carried out the postmortem was reported to be absconding.

The decision was taken here at a high level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Bhairon Singh Shekhawat and attended by Chief Secretary Arun Kumar, DG (Police) Amitabh Gupta,Principal Chief Conservator of Forests V.P. Sancheti, and other senior officials. Film stars, Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, Tabu and Neelam were booked by the Forest Department on Friday on charges of killing endangered animals after a tip-off that they had been hunting black bucks. The stars were let off on bail but were still in Jodhpur and forest officials were reportedly questioning them about the matter.

The killing of black bucks by the film stars has provoked several protests. A delegation of wildlife activists and experts met the authorities earlier to lodge their protest against the incident. A protest was also reported to be on in Jodhpur. A statement from Bishnoi Samaj has blamed ``Heritage Hotel mafia'' for carrying on this racket on a regular basis.
