Extortionist held in Vadodara

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, Oct 11: Hanskamal Grover, a city land broker and wanted in four cases of extortion, land grabbing and suspected of having underground links, was arrested in a joint operation by the Surat and the Vadodara police from a Vadodara Hotel late on Saturday night.

According to information, Grover was nabbed from Hotel Sagar in Raopura in Vadodara, where he was staying for the past fortnight along with his wife and son. While he is currently in the custody of Vadodara Detention of Crime Branch, a police team from Surat led by Detention of Crime Branch PI C M Mudaliar and other officials have left for Vadodara to escort Grover back.

While the Vadodara police had earlier carried out raids in the Fatehpura area, they could not nab him. Even the Surat police were on his lookout for the past two months.

Talking to Express Newsline, Surat Police Commissioner Maniram said Grover was likely to be produced before a magistrate on Monday, where the police would press for a remand period.

Grover was named prime suspect in a land grabbing case of the Sarvodaya Seva Mandir at Ghod Dod road. He was also named accused in three other extortion and land grabbing cases in the Umra police station area. A case under the Atrocities Act has been registered as the Mandal is an SC/ST trust.

While Additional Police Commissioner P C Thakur and other city officials had been striving for the past two months to nab him, he had secured `no arrest warrants' from the High Court on two occasions.

According to police officials, special crack teams comprising the DCB and the city police had kept some telephone and mobile numbers under observation and thus were able to trace him.

Among those involved in the raids included officials of the Surat and Vadodara units of the DCB and top city police officials. Grover was arrested under section 47(1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure in Vadodara as he had a clean record there.
