October 12: The South Asian Games are to be held in the Nepalese capital Kathmandu from September 25 to October 4 next year, Nepal Olympic Committee president Rukma Shumshere Rana said today.
The last South Asian Sports Federation Games, generally known as the SAF Games, were held in 1995 in the Indian City of Madras. The dates were decided at an executive meeting of the Federation in Kathmandu at the weekend, said Rana, who was recently elected NOC president in a poll ordered by the Asian Olympic Council and the IOC.
Nepal, which failed to host the 1997 SAF Games because of a lack of sports facilities, has since received substantial aid from China for their construction.
The NOC president said all preparations for the event were on schedule and added, ``We will be fully prepared for the Games by next year''.
The twelve sports disciplines are athletics, football, boxing, volleyball, wrestling, table tennis, swimming, shooting, weight-lifting, taekwondo, judo and the South Asian game of kabbadi.
TheSAF Games were first staged in Kathmandu in 1984 and have been held in in the past in Bangladesh (1985, 1993) India (1987, 1995) Pakistan (1991) and Sri Lanka (1989).
