Labour lawyers end stir

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
October 12: Six hundred lawyers affiliated to the Labour Law Practioners Association (LLPA), who had struck work since September 14, 1998 to protest the government's inability to shift the labour and industrial courts from the dilapidated Arun Chambers at Tardeo, have decided to suspend their agitation. They will resume work from Thursday, October 15.

Secretary of LLPA, Mukund Jambaulikar, said the decision was taken at a special general body meeting held this morning following an assurance by the state government to shift the courts to the new administrative building, Bandra, at the earliest.

He said the association received a letter from Minister of State for Labour Raj Purohit, which said the government had decided to allocate an additional 8,000 square-feet space on the new building's sixth floor for the courts. Earlier, the government had given 18,000 sq ft on the ground and first floors of the building. The premises given to the courts in Tardeo measures 26,000 sq ft.

Jambaulikar said thegovernment has already sanctioned a sum of Rs 58.28 lakh for 18,000 sq ft and has assured that more money towards the additional 8,000 sq ft would be sanctioned shortly.

Since September 14, LLPA, along with its counterparts in Nashik and Thane, struck work. In all, 12 industrial courts, eight labour courts, three workmen compensation and wage board courts are housed at Arun Chambers. The courts are located on the third, fifth, sixth and seventh floors of the building. In June, a portion of the ceiling of one of the courtrooms collapsed. While all courtrooms located on the third floor have been shut, two courtrooms located on the sixth floor have also been closed. An agitation held by the lawyers in June was called off after an assurance by the government to shift the courts to Bandra by August 15.
