Saxena, Manjusha claim titles

October 12: Fourth seed Sushant Saxena of Uttar Pradesh pulled off an upset when he beat Abhinn Shyam Gupta of Air-India 7-15, 15-9, 15-13 in the men's final of the Rs 4 lakh Indian Grand Prix Badminton Championship at the Bhim Stadium in Bhiwani today. With this win Saxena pocketed Rs 26,000 and Gupta got Rs 16,000. The losing semi-finalists received Rs 10,000 each.

According to information received here, top seed Manjusha Kanwar of Maharashtra won the women's singles title by beating third seed PVV Lakshmi of Andhra Pradesh 7-11, 11-5, 11-1. Manjusha won Rs 20,000 and Lakshmi got Rs 14,000.

Lakshmi, however, had the consolation of claiming the women's doubles title when she, in partnership with Madhumita Bisht defeated Manjusha Kanwar and Archana Deodhar 15-8, 15-1.

The number of injuries Sushant Saxena had sustained in the past year has played havoc with his game and career. But the Allhabad shuttler put all those bad memories behind him to give a boost to his game as well as career. In the excitingfinal, 25-year-old National Coal Limited employee feasted the packed audience with excellent game to win the singles title by beating his sparring partner. Incidentally this was his major title, both in terms of money as well as significance.

In the women's singles, Manjusha Kanwar came back after a game down against Lakshmi. This was Manjusha's second Grand Prix win this season. Earlier she had won the title at Hyderabad.
