Fashion Frenzy

Sujata Assomull
Last week was a seven-day long frenzy of fashion. All the designers were gearing up for the festive season and there was a blitz of shows -- Ensemble, Reverie, Suneet Verma and Azeem Khan, to name a few. It started on Monday with Ensemble's preview. This glitzy boutique is host to many of the country's leading designers, including Tarun Tahiliani, Shahab Durazi, Arjun Khanna and Monisha Jaising. The one thing all the designers had in common was that there was nothing really new to their collections. Shahab introduced a line of saris using his traditional, graded Japanese pearls, glass beads and Austrian diamantes. As always his finish was impeccable. In his western range, the Empire cut (another favourite of Durazi's) was very predominant. A welcome change was the introduction of a petite range by Durazi.

Arjun Khanna's resham embroidery too had nothing new about it and he stuck to the colour palette of white, pewter and beige. Tarun Tahiliani did have some new designs, including some sheer sariswith rather unusual petticoats. As Tarun says, "It is a free-spirited collection. The theme is purely my own evolving sense of style, comfort and utter elegance." Another noticeable development was that Tarun's prices were lower than last years. As was Suneet Verma's. His collection ranged from subtle and sophisticated cream kari-work kameezes to some pink and gold saris and lehengas that resembled a birthday cake. His influence came from the Art Deco period and were aimed at those who enjoy heavily-worked on clothes.

The reigning trend of the season is the kurta worn with trousers. "They look very young," says Manish Malhotra, who unveiled his second collection for Reverie over the weekend. His line included some well-finished trousers and jackets, and like Tahiliani's range there was a heavy usage of net.

Last, but not least, was Azeem Khan's show. Held at his store in Colaba, this young designer is the new kid on the block. His corset sari blouses and sarong-draped saris oozed sex appeal.Azeem is the grandson of S U Zariwala, the city's most famous zari man, and is trying to make his name in the world of design. Judging by his latest collection, it looks like he has a bright future.
