Oil pipeline explosion claims 500 in Nigeria
The death toll in the blaze that engulfed scores of people scavenging for petrol from a burst pipeline in southern Nigeria, climbed to 500. Though there was no official confirmation on the deaths, eye-witnesses feared the toll would go up to 600.
Iran standoff with Taliban religious militia defused
After more than a week of diplomacy that took him to the headquarters of Afghanistan's Taliban religious militia, the United Nations special envoy said that the danger of a military confrontation between Iran and the Taliban army had past.
Israel halts peace talks except on security
Israel called a halt to all negotiations at the Mideast peace summit except concerning Palestinian anti-terrorism actions in light of Palestinian attack on an Israeli bus station, Israeli officials said.
