Calcutta, Oct 20: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has requested the International Cricket Council (ICC) to help Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh rectify his bowling action. A letter to this effect was today received by ICC president Jagmohun Dalmiya.Mr Dalmiya told a news conference here today that he would ask the Council to expedite the matter so that Harbhajan Singh could be back at the earliest.
``ICC wants the game to be fair,'' Dalmiya said and added that there were rules to be followed. Under the ICC guideline, the complaining member(s) and the member from whose country the ``suspect'' player is from, cannot be consulted. In the case of Rajesh Chauhan, Australia's Bobby Simpson was not consulted as he was the complainant.
``As a matter of rule the persons complaining will not be consulted. But I cannot name who have raised objections to Harbhajan's bowling action,'' the ICC president said.
When pointed out that none of the umpires who had officiated in matches whichHarbhajan played had ``no balled'' the bowler for his action, Dalmiya said that the umpires might have spoken to the match referees. In the case of Rajesh Chauhan too, none of the umpires who conducted the matches he played in had ``called'' him for chucking.
Asked when Harbhajan could be expected back in action once he is cleared, Dalmiya said, ``I will ask the ICC to expedite the matter. Maybe by the India-New Zealand series, if not not earlier. But nothing could be said now now.
