NASHIK, Oct 20: Notwithstanding the "Saffron Week" launched by the ruling Shiv Sena from October 9 to 16 in Maharashtra to inform people of the Manohar Joshi government's achievements, the Manmad unit of the party took out a mashaal morcha (torch procession) on Sunday night to protest the neglect of the town by the government. The Manmad town is in Nandgaon taluka of Nashik district and is a major railway junction on the Central Railway with a population of about one lakh. However, the town faces perennial scarcity of water, which is supplied only twice a week for a duration of one hour each. The proposal to set up an industrial area has been pending for the past several years. Gigantic oil terminals of the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation, the Bharat Petroleum and the Indian Oil are located near Manmad but have not generated jobs for the locals. Project-affected farmers have been agitating for their demands.
The procession led by city unit chief Rajabhau Chhajed, Nashik district (rural) chief AltafKhan and Nandgaon taluka unit chief Sunil Jagtap, submitted a memorandum to tehsildar K R Wagh, demanding `taluka' status for Manmad, adequate water supply, setting up of an industrial area by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation, widening of the Malegaon-Manmad road with a bypass, upgrading the electricity distribution system, and octroi for the Manmad Municipal Council from the oil terminals near the town. The municipal council president, Arun Tathe, also participated in the morcha.
