MUMBAI, Oct 22: An expert committee appointed by the state government has recommended the formation of a `compromising body' to ensure speedy recovery of sales tax dues. The committee, set up on July 24, recently submitted its report to Finance and Planning Minister Mahadeo Shivankar, who will take a decision on its recommendations.
The committee has said the new body should be headed by a former high court judge or former principal secretary of the state government. It said cases involving minimum dues of Rs 1 lakh should be referred to the body as well as those in which a business has suffered losses due to natural calamities. The body should also consider cases pending before the Board of Industrial and Financial Reconstruction. The committee has also recommended imposition of a condition on these tax payers: they should pay a minimum 20 per cent of their dues.
