Srinath wriggles out of Panja's stranglehold

HYDERABAD, OCT 22: Prahlad Srinath of India, Patrick Erhardt of Germany, Johan Hede and Federico Rovai both of Sweden moved into the men's singles semi-finals in the second-leg of ITF-GVK Satellite Circuit tennis tournament at SAAP-APLTA Tennis Complex here today.

Top seed Srinath had to ward off a stiff challenge from Indian qualifier Saurav Panja 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in one hour, 52 minutes. Second seed Rovai of Sweden outplayed Danai Udhomchoke of Thailand 6-3, 6-2, third seed Erhardt of Germany dropped a set before defeating qualifier Mustafa Ghouse of India 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 while fourth seed Hede of Sweden triumphed over fifth seed Timo Nigri of Germany 6-2, 6-3.

In an even contest, Srinath, running slight temperature, faced occasional cramps during the course of the tie, found it hard in the second set. But in the second set, Panja lead 3-1.

Srinath suddenly opened up to play a total offensive game and scored most of the points levelling at 4-all. In the next game, Panja went up with serve to make it5-all and then broke Srinath's serve to lead 6-5 and keeping the serve, he levelled set scores.

Even in the decider, both players shared games and locked up with 3-all. At this juncture, Srinath encountered cramps on his right calf muscles and after medical attention, resumed the game.

But Srinath put up a remarkable come back with his serve and leveled the game at 4-all. Panja double faulted in this crucial game for Srinath to lead 5-4 and Srinath won the match 6-4 to set up a semi-final clash with Hede.

Men's doubles: Nitin Kirtane/Sandeep Kirtane (Ind) bt Vishal Gupta/Praven Sreenivasan (Ind) 6-4, 6-4.

Singles (PQFs): Danai Udomchoke (Tha) bt Ravikiran Bhat (Ind) 6-4, 6-4; Saurav Panja (Ind) bt Sanzarus Zaman (Ind)6-1, 6-2; Federico Rovai (Swe) bt Vijay Kannan (Ind) 6-2, 6-2; Mustafa Ghouse (Ind) bt Niko Karagiannis (Gre) 6-2, 6-3; Johan Hede (Swe) bt Sandeep Kirtane (Ind) 6-2, 6-4; Prahlad Srinath (Ind) bt Vishal Gupta (Ind) 6-0, 6-0; Patrick Erhardt (Ger) bt Harsh Mankad (Ind) 6-2, 7-5; Timo Nigri (Ger) bt Vasudeva Reddy (Ind) 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.
