MUMBAI, Oct 22: Every ten days, nearly nine men are caught by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) in the Mumbai Division of the Central Railway for travelling in the ladies compartment. According to figures released by CR today, 237 men were caught trespassing in the first nine months of this year, 44 in September alone.More than 17,600 people were caught travelling without a proper ticket and ended up adding Rs 12 lakh into CR's coffers. Meanwhile, 3823 others, including hawkers and the `ladies' men, were prosecuted for various offences and fined to the tune of Rs 4.72 lakh. Continuing their drive against beggars and urchins, RPF personnel drove nearly 65,000 of them out of railway premises this year. Many were sent to beggars' homes and the children handed over to various non-governmental organisations like Vatsalya and Don Bosco.
In September, more than 5000 persons were caught without valid tickets and 324 were prosecuted for improper conduct and the railways collected a fine of nearly Rs 4.37 lakh inthis exercise. This effort of the railways has resulted in an increase in the sale of tickets by nearly 57 lakh in September compared to August. The drive was conducted by 150 RPF personnel deployed between CST and Kalyan, Kalyan and Karjat, and Kurla and Panvel.
In a bid to remove encroachments on railway land, this year the RPF with the help of local police removed over 4000 of nearly 25,000 slums. The main line accounts for over 8000 such encroachments and the harbour line with over 16,700 slums on either side of the tracks.
