Ministers quit voluntarily, says Sukh Ram

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SHIMLA, Oct 22: Himachal Vikas Congress supremo Sukh Ram said here today that the resignation of three HVC ministers was their ``voluntary action'' to dispel rumours about increased infighting within the party. These were not aimed at mounting any extraneous pressure on the Dhumal government for favours of any sort.

Sukh Ram also declared that his party or ministers royal to him, would not create any instability for the government. He also claimed that there was no move to put up a rival candidate for the Baijnath Assembly seat and both, BJP as well as HVC had agreed to field a common candidate.

``However, the HVC wanted the seat to be left to it in view of sacrifices which the party had made in favour of the BJP during the past seven months,'' Sukh Ram told a press conference here.

Asserting that there was no problem in working of the coalition government, the former communication minister said the HVC-Dhumal government would complete five years. He said there was no final decision, as of now as to whether the BJP or HVC would field its candidate.

``One thing is very clear that we will not create a situation which benefits the Congress in Baijnath or create any instability for the government,'' Sukh Ram declared.

The HVC president giving reasons for HVC's Claim to Baijnath seat said that it was traditionally a Congress seat and BJP, had won the seat only twice. The CPI had also wrested the seat once. Thus, HVC cannot drop its claim on it without discussing the issue threadbare with the BJP leadership.

Sukh Ram also reacted angrily to rumours that he had been lobbying for his son Anil Sharma for induction into the Vajpayee ministry.

The former minister denied differences with the BJP but reiterated the demand for formation of a coordination committee to sort out irritants, which normally come up in the working of the alliance. ``Had there been a coordination committee, the differences and misunderstandings would never arise,'' he observed.

Sukh Ram informed that he had at least four meetings with the Chief Minister and also telephonic talks to dispel the impression about growing rift within the alliance. ``In fact, a section of the Press even had claimed that serious differences had cropped up within the HVC,'' Sukh Ram alleged.

Replying to questions, Sukh Ram said the BJP was a cadre-based party and its rank and file did not have the experience of sharing of power in a coalition government. This had created a situation which sometimes threatened the coalition. Sukh Ram said the HVC leadership had nothing to do with internal functioning of the BJP.

Public Works Minister Mohinder Singh who was present at the Press conference denied having said RSS cadre was pressuring the Dhumal government.

Sukh Ram admitted that HVC leaders were disappointed by the appointment of the various chairmen of the corporation and the board and said HVC had not got its due share.

Sukh Ram said the HVC executive would meet here on October 30 to finalise its candidate for Baijnath.

He also disclosed that the Prime Minister had sent his chargesheet against former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh to Home Minister L. K. Advani who had assured him that action would be taken. He, however, said delay in this regard was a disturbing factor.
