COIMBATORE, Oct 23: A decision on imposing a ban on caste-based processions would be taken at the second round of all party meeting scheduled for October 26, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi said today.Addressing the media here, the Chief Minister said party leaders, who attended the meeting yesterday, had expressed serious concern over the growing incidents of caste violence in the State.
Several suggestions on how to prevent recurrence of caste clashes and to regulate or impose a ban on caste-based processions were discussed in detail at the meeting, Karunanidhi said.
The participants at the meet also called for taking preventive steps to curb the tendency of retired IAS and IPS officials rendering help or heading caste-based forums, he said.
A special court to deal with the cases relating to caste clashes in southern districts would be set up at Madurai, Karunanidhi said.
Karunanidhi said the recommendations of Justice Mohan Commission on the southern district clashes would not beaccepted in toto. A few of them are being considered, he said.
The one-man Gokulakrishnan Commission set up to inquire into the communal violence and the serial blasts in Coimbatore would submit its report soon, the Chief Minister informed.
Stating that there was no need for police personnel to get dejected for not being rewarded for their work during the Coimbatore blasts, the Chief Minister said that they would be rewarded suitably. Few police personnel have already been awarded with Anna medals, he said.
Referring to the crisis faced by the textile industry in the region, Karunanidhi said the issue had already been discussed with the mill managements and trade unions. The State had already written to the Centre twice and has expressed hope that the problems would soon be solved, he said. The issue would be taken up again during his visit to Delhi on October 28.
