Patel challenges dissent; ready to face JDLP too

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
BANGALORE, Oct 23: Karnataka Chief Minister J H Patel went on the offensive on Friday challenging his detractors saying he was unafraid to face dissent against his leadership both within the Assembly and outside. Patel had earlier said that he had no need to get a confidence vote in the legislature party.

``I am ready to face both the Janata Dal Legislature Party and the Assembly session. I will repeat again that I am not scared of any political activities and political developments in the state. I will follow all the democratic norms. I will not budge from facing them both on the floor of the house and outside the house'', said Chief Minister J H Patel.

``When I say outside, it is JDLP, which can be arranged anytime during the session, when time permits. I am ever ready to prove my strength if the opposition members ask for it'', he said.

Patel said he had no intention of voluntarily withdrawing from the chair. `Not when there is vulgar display of greed for power politics all over. Such sacrificingidealists do not exist nor they have a place in this country'', he said.

He came down heavily on the political debauchery in the state. ``In the state there is debauchery at the individual level. The media is cultivating it. It should not happen. By debauchery I mean not being loyal to the party from which he or she has been given ticket, not being loyal to constituency''.

``This is individual debauchery, debauchery to the constituency, as it takes away the attention from the right things, which I am opposed to', he said.

He said the there was no question of postponing the Assembly session. The notification has been issued and there is absolutely no scope for postponement of the session. `The JDLP will be held during the session, whenever there is time to think, pause and take stock of the situation'.

Patel admitted he expected nothing less than a stormy session ahead what with raging issues like the current dissent, the debilitating flood situation and the perennial Cauvery problem among otherthings.

When pointed out that Deve Gowda was more keen on meeting his supporters, feeling their pulse, Patel said: ``Let him ( Deve Gowda) go on feel the pulse of his supporters and then come to me to feel my pulse.'

When pointed out that he was in his elements today (Friday), Patel quipped: ``You want to know the reason for this? The pain (of the Hernia operation) has come down and hence I am in this fighting spirit''.

When asked whether he was afraid any ministers would desert him, he said: ``So far no one has expressed such a wish. When they do, I will tell that is the right place for you: the desert''.

``He said the party suffered from deathwish all along. The syndrome was visible first in Japan and then in Germany. But it is for the first time such deathwish of individual for psychological reason is being felt here and JD was undergoing such phase''. But the capacity for the survival was limitless and JD has proved it once too many times earlier, he also added.

He said the situation of splitin the party will not ever come as every has realised that they will be doomed if they opt for split.

When asked how the party would fare if an election was declared now, he said: `Considering the political situation in the country, Janata Dal in Karnataka will fare better than other parties in other states'.
