Indian squad defers departure by a day

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
Oct 23: The Indian cricket team for the Wills International nine-nation one-day series in Dhaka might postpone their trip by a day to grab vital extra practice in the Capital. The 14-member side, under Mohammed Azharuddin, is currently scheduled to catch their flight on Sunday afternoon.

Revealing this after a four-hour workout here, coach Anshuman Gaekwad added, ``We can have an extra day's practice here rather than wasting one day in Dhaka where unseasonal rains are hampering other teams' practice matches.''

But that, understandably, is the least of the India's worries after the Test defeat in Zimbbawe though skipper Mohammed Azharuddin said, ``We will go out and play our natural game. Our morale is always high.''

Gaekwad reflected that mood of confidence adding, ``We are going to win the Cup in Dhaka and get into the right frame of mind for the coming tours before the extragavanza in England -- the 1999 World Cup.''

``Let's hope we do the best and continue with where we had left in Dhaka at thestart of the year,'' Gaekwad added at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium Grounds.

Though unhappy over Harbhajan Singh's absence, Azharuddin said it gave Delhi all-rounder Nikhil Chopra a chance to prove himself. ``He is a good striker of the ball and a decent off-spinner and I hope he does well in Dhaka.''

Gaekwad said the strategy for the opener against Australia will be chalked out after reaching Dhaka and getting a feel of the wicket. On Shane Warne's absence, Gaekwad commented: ``When he was there (in India and Sharjah), he didn't make any difference.''
