St Stephen's women, Hindu men win titles

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, October 23: Hindu College men claimed the Coca-Cola New Delhi YMCA Basketball title beating Shri Ram College of Commerce 83-70 in a thrilling final at the National Stadium courts here today.

The women's crown was annexed by St Stephen's College hoopsters who defeated Jesus and Mary College in a one-sided final. St Stephen's cagers won 63-30.

The third place went to Kirorimal College as their men triumphed over PGDAV 84-63 in another tight match. Indraprastha College hoopsters clinched the third spot beating Lady Shri Ram College 29-25 in a close game.

The Hindu men went on the attack right from the word go with some fast breaks but their rivals SRCC also matched them basket for basket at least until the first session. However, the latter fell behind in their scoring pattern in the second, particularly after the team team up seven fouls quickly. This helped Hindu cagers close in on and keep a few points lead to emerge winners.

As for the women's game, St Stephen's were way ahead of their rivals, excelling in their sharp shooting. In fact, more than their shooting, it was a tight defence that kept JMC cagers on a tight leash. Even their rebound collection was pathetic and it only helped their rival's cause.

Top scorer for men in the tournament was Pradeep Duggal of KMC while Nishita Chandhari of St Stephen's scored the maximum in the women's section. Aditya of SRCC was adjuged the best men player while Nishita was declared best woman player.
