COLOMBO, Oct 25: Run machine Aravinda de Silva has broken the hearts of his female fans with the announcement of his engagement to model Sarita Rajendran. It is not certain when the two will be married but sources close to the cricketer said it could be as early as December this year. The couple exchanged rings last week at a private ceremony at his home. Two other Sri Lankan cricketers, master blaster Sanath Jayasuriya and bowler Kumara Dharmasena, were married recently.
Aravinda and Sarita met a few months ago and the first hint that the 32-year-old batsman -- known for his flashy sports cars, partying and an addiction to mobile phones -- was finally going to settle down came when the model went to the airport to receive him on the team's return from England last month. As with the personal life of several other cricketers,Aravinda's too is not without controversy. His engagement comes months after an Australian court directed him to pay maintenance to a Sri Lankan woman in Brisbane who said he hadfathered her child.
Aravinda's father Sam de Silva recently told The Indian Express that the court case was not an issue anymore as his son had decided not to appeal against it and had agreed to the court's directive. ``He has not cheated, defrauded or molested anyone. He has not run away. He has agreed to pay and like a true gentleman, he has met his obligations.'' The child named Aravinda Saliya de Silva Perera was born in September 1996. Aravinda will pay the child's mother, Vivian Sharmistha Abeywardene Perera, 400 Australian dollars every month till the boy comes of age at 18 years.
