Grover remanded to 4 more days of custody

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, Oct 25: The city police have arrested controversial builder Hanskamal Grover, accused in land-grabbing cases, for the fifth time and remanded him to four more days of custody. With this recent arrest, the police have exhausted all six cases registered against him in city police stations.

According to officials interrogating Grover, he would be detained under provisions of the Prevention of Anti-Social Activities Act after the remand period is over. Even Police Commissioner Maniram had earlier stated that, if required, Grover would be arrested under PASA Act, which had no bail provisions.

The police are yet to come up with any conclusive evidence against Grover in the four cases of land-grabbing, breach of trust and extortion that he has been interrogated for, including his involvement in an Atrocities Act case.

Grover was produced before a judicial magistrate on Saturday evening and remanded to four-day police custody in the case involving the Sarvodaya Shikshan Mandal, a SC/ST trust, that he was accused of attempting to usurp.

The five-member investigating team requested the magistrate for further remand as evidence in the form of papers and witnesses were still to be recovered from the accused.

While the High Court has quashed two cases against him, the police have arrested him five times in the remaining four cases already.

The land-grabbing cases as well as his proximity to gangsters and extortionists came to light about three months ago when the police nabbed Dharmendra Punjabi, with a revolver, who confessed that he was approached by Grover in a couple of land-grabbing cases.

After eluding the city police for over two months, Hanskamal Grover was arrested last month from a hotel in Vadodara which belongs to a close associate of a Mumbai underworld don and is since in the custody of the city police.
