Onions to cost more

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, Oct 25: Onions will become dearer in the next few days as the Gultekdi market yard on Sunday received only 25 trucks supplying 5000 bags. The wholesale rate of onions went up to Rs 220-270 per ten kg.

Wholesale traders were visibly upset as of 25 trucks which came from Baramati, Phaltan and Ahmednagar, only eight trucks of onions were fresh. The others were of sub-standard quality. Normally, the wholesale rate is about Rs 180 per 10 kg. Today it shot up by 20-40 per cent.

As against 40 to 50 trucks carrying potatoes, only 20 trickled in at the market yard from Satara, Talegaon Dhamdhere, Koregaon and Wathar. The wholesale rate of potatoes increased to Rs 110-160 per 10 kg. Leafy vegetables are also costlier with at least a 20-30 per cent increase in the rates.
