PUNE, Oct 25: It was Pune's day at the SP College as both men and women snatched the titles in the state level softball championship here today.While the men were given a run for the money by Amravati before registering 6-5 win, the women had a roller coaster run over same team with a 14-0 win.
With the likes of international in the hosts rank, Usha Bhogade's team raced to 6 home run advantage. Usha lead the charge with three runs while, Rohini Deshpande, Manda Kumar, Mrudula Mahajan and Bhagyshree Asher chipping in two runs each, in the championship organised by Poona District Softball Association.
Later when it came for the visitors to take strike they succumbed under some accurate catching by Pune eves who even denied them of opening their account.
It was not so when the Pune men took to field against Amaravathi despite having two internationals, Atul Shinde, Rakesh Gaikwad who represented Indian at the 6th Asian men championship in Phillippines had to come up with their reserves to pip the rivals 6-5.
Atul Shinde, Shitit Kulkarni, Ritesh Raut, Kaustubh Gawande and Neeraj Kadkaud scored one run each.
In the second innings Amravati having few good players like Pankaj Gulani and Sachin Patne who batted well as both added two home runs each for their team. However, in the last minute Kaustubh's excellent catches and two run out titled the game in Pune's way. Santosh Sawarkar and Vicky Gautam tried their best but even they were run out at the end.
The Best players of the tournament was awarded to Rakesh Gaikwad in the men's section while Usha Bhogade in the women's section. And the other Following are the other prizes.
Men's Best fielder: Pankaj Gulani (Amravati); Best batter: Shridhar Gadgil (Jalgaon); Best pitcher: Rajendra Mesal (Pune); Best catcher: Jignesh Kothari (Jalgaon). Women Best fielder: Bhagyashree Asher (Pune); Best batsman: Seema Rangade (Pune); Best pitcher: Anuradha Advani (Pune); Best Catcher: Manda Kumbhar (Pune).
