Ladies golf team for Asiad to be named on October 30

CHANDIGARH, Oct 25: Top golfers of the country will be seen in action in the sixth Punjab Open Amateur Ladies Golf Championship for Max India Cup which will be teed off on October 27 at the Chandigarh Golf Course here.

Giving details of the tournament, Madhu Brar, Captain of the ladies section of the Chandigarh Golf Course, said today that more than 50 golfers would compete in the tournament. Entries have been received from Calcutta, Madras, Delhi, Dehradun and Chandigarh.

Madhu Brar said the Punjab Open had assumed greater significance as the Indian team for the Bangkok Asian Games to be held in December, would be selected during the meet. The IGU may announce the team on October 30 or 31.

One golfer each from France and the United States will also take part. However, they will not get any point for ranking in the Indian Golf Union categorised tournament. Among those who have staked their claim for the top honours are Nonita Lall Qureshi, Vandana Aggarwal and Urvashi Sethi Sodhi. National champion and winner of the Chandigarh Open Golf Anjali Chopra will be leading the Delhi contingent.

Defending champion and local star India's top golfer Parnita Garewal is in top form and is expected to live up to her reputation. Local sub-junior Irina Brar, figuring in the top ten lady golfers of the country and fresh from her victory in the St Xavier's Northern India Junior and Sub-Junior tournament, will be matching her skills against the senior golfers.

The winner of the Max India Cup will be the golfer who returns the best gross score in 72-hole strokeplay. Max Silver Salve, Max Challenge Bowl, Max Bronze Plate, Max Thirties Trophies, Max Junior Shield, Hutchison Max Sub-Junior Trophy are the other titles for which golfers from different handicap divisions will contest.
