Stone falls off Puri temple, one injured

Prakash Dash
Bhubaneswar, Oct 26: Close on the heels of a two-tonne slab falling off from the historic Sun Temple at Konark due to the negligence of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), another big limestone fell from the main temple wall of Lord Sri Jagannath at Puri, 60 km from here. According to reports, 72-year-old Raghunath Patra of Puri was seriously injured when the limestone weighing about 15 kg fell on him. He was sitting in front of the Bimla Temple within the periphery of Sri Jagannath Temple complex.

This is the third such incident in the world famous 12th century shrine. About six years ago, a huge stone slab fell from the `Anlabedha' of the temple which then raised a lot of hue and cry throughout the State. Last year, another stone slab fell from a wall near the `Ananda Bazar' in which one devotee was killed.

When contacted, the ASI officials denied falling of any limestone from the wall of the main temple. They said a 3 to 4 kg limestone was kept by some miscreants over the 20 feet Baraha temple, adjacent to the wall of the main temple. The limestone was brought by the miscreants from the outer wall of the main temple, they clarified, adding it was pushed by monkeys often seen inside the temple premises.

Sources from the temple administration said they have contacted the ASI officials for a thorough check up of the temple following the incident. The ASI had removed the outer lime plasters of the main temple only two years ago.

Meanwhile, Patra has been admitted to Puri hospital with multiple injuries. The administration has sanctioned Rs 2,000 towards treatment of the old devotee.
