Agwan, Kamath excel

MUMBAI, Oct 26: Vivektesh Agwan and Amar Kamath won the titles in the under-8 and under-12 categories, remaining unbeaten in the Bournvita Inter-Schools Chess Tournament being conducted by the Kalina Recreation Centre and held at the Don Bosco School, Matunga today.

Sayali Phadke and Mugdha Variyar won the under-8 and under-12 titles in the girls category respectively. All the winners will win 50 pounds each from London School of Economics and Political Science.

Vivektesh Agwan of AK Joshi School, Thane defeated Utkarsh Gupta to end up with 10.5 points, a clear 1.5 points ahead of the field. Akshay Bhor, KP Nimidevand Nitesh Bhat finished behind Viviktesh in that order. All of them finished with nine points but the tie-breaker was applied.

In the under-12 section, Amar Kamath shared the top spot with Vaibhav Saxena but the former had the better progressive score (62.5) when the tie-breaker was applied to Vaibhav who finished with (60.5).

Amar took a short draw with R Chandrashekar while Vaibhav Saxenadefeated Rohil Bhat after 61 moves.

Sayali, the defending girls champion, finished fifth overall but won the under-8 girls title. She defeated Akshat Kundalia today.

Mugdha Variyar inched to the title ahead of Entrants Division Champion, Niharika Thakkar. Mugdha won against Manish Raut today.

Final placings

Under-8: 1. Viviktesh Agwan 10.5 points; 2. Akshay Bhor 9 (50 progressive score); 3. K P Nimidev 9 (48); 4. Nitesh Bhat 9 (44); 5. Sayali Phadke 8.5; 6. Omkar Parab 8 (49.5); 7. Anuj Tawri 8 (46); 8. Kashi Kishore Shah 8 (44); 9. Salim Ali Siddiqi (44); 10. Prasad Patil 8 (43).

U-12: 1. Amar Kamath 10 (62.5); 2. Vaibhav Saxena 10 (60.5); 3. R Chandrashekar 8.5 (55.5); 4. Vinay Kumar Mohandas 8.5 (55.5); 5. Sameer Thakkar 8.5 (54); 6. Gaurav Higne 8.5 (52); 7. Aditya Vora 8.5 (50); 8. Anirudh Unni 8.5 (47.5); 9. Devendra Sathe 8 (53.5); 10. Aditya Desai 8 (52.5).
